A calm night: getting ready for sleep, step by step

Routines, room temperature and overnight leak protection.

Night waking is usually about discomfort rather than hunger: too warm, too wet or too bright. All three can be dealt with in advance.

The comfortable range for a nursery is 18–22 °C at 40–60 % humidity. Overheating disrupts sleep more than cool air does — check the back of the neck rather than cool hands.

A repeatable routine of three or four steps in the same order — bath, diaper change, feed, dimmed light — works as a signal for sleep. What matters is the predictability of the sequence, not how long it takes.

Put on a fresh diaper right before bed and make sure the leg barriers are flipped outward — a barrier tucked inward is the single most common cause of night leaks. And if your child has outgrown their size, the night is where you'll notice it first.

Weight is the main guide. The ages in the chart are approximate — children grow at different rates.
